Check out this sick video our coworker Belle made to go with her philosophy essay! It’s titled “Body Modification and Achieving the Sublime”. If you are interested in knowing more about her essay read below! There is also a link at the end of the caption if you’re interested in reading her essay!

Here’s what Belle had to say about her work:
“Have you or a loved one been affected by the obsession with getting body modifications? If so, philosophy may help explain why! Through a philosophical lens, body modifications, a visceral experience of both pain and pleasure, can be explained through the aesthetic experience called the “sublime.”
The sublime is an emotional response to the pleasure that comes from experiencing something astonishing, painful, out of your control, or incomprehensible. (Such as the view after a long hike, thinking about infinityπ«₯, laboring a child, or the vastness of the ocean) Humans have been synthesizing this experience through spiritual piercing and tattooing rituals for thousands of years. In the United States, the queer and kinkster communities made access to body modifications main stream in the 1980s. (Thank you Fakir Musafar, Elayne Angel, Jim Ward, and so many others)
For those who find solace in the body mods community, the sublime experience of body modifications is often used as a way to cope with/heal from other parts of life.
To learn more about the philosophy behind body mods explore these resources:
Dances Sacred and Profane (movie- Fakir Musafar)
Sun Dancing, the Great Sioux Piercing Ritual (book— Thomas Mails)
Running the Gauntlet (book- Jim Ward)
For a challenging philosophy read, check out: the Critique of Judgment (book-Immanuel Kant)
